Fabulous Guest Bloggers of the Day: Sana Shuja and Morgan Jones

Daily Tribute

Michael Jackson R.I.P. 1958-2009, you legend you.

(Note from Prof Frakt -- I generally don't feature child molesters on my website, but in this case I'll make an exception.)

Let’s start with what you all really want to hear about – the swine flu epidemic. Moms and Dads, we’re all okay. The Duke cafeteria, however, is not. What were once free, roaming, self-serve hamburger toppings are now encased in plastic, sanitarily-friendly, germ-free containers.

On another food note, we’d thought you’d all be glad to know that Benjamin Samuel Schwartz is satisfying his potassium quota for the day.

Ben’s Banana Count: 5

        Standing Record: 9

Today’s lessons covered the Rome Statutes of the ICC and the cultural aspects of The Hague, where we will be arriving in approximately 26:03:42ish. That’s right, tonight’s our last night in Durham, NC, U.S.A. Hello Den Haag, goodbye 9th Street Ben and Jerry’s.

Ben and Jerry’s

And parents, we’re growing up. We’ve officially begun severing the umbilical cord. We’re one step closer to survival with the big, the bad, and the dirty – armed with quarters, Tide, and Bounce sheets. We all successfully did our laundry today. What an incredible group of kids.

We rounded out the day with a Talent Show, during which we showcased our lip synching, prologue memorizing, and singing/dancing talents. Unfortunately, we were still one-upped by the 11 year old violinist Federico Morris (child prodigy of one of yesterday’s speakers, Madeline Morris). Once again, we should probably count on those academic scholarships.

(talent show pictures to come later)

Unfortunately, one of our group leaders was absent from today’s festivities. Kate Temoney fell ill and will be unable to join us for the rest of the program. We will miss her very, very much and wish her a speedy recovery. (Folks, it wasn’t the swine flu. We promise).

K8T$!

Prof Frakt says:  Kate reports that she is doing fine.  The kids made a lovely human tribute to her forming her "gangsta" name K8T$ (get it, "Kate Temoney") despite being gnawed upon by the friendly local ant population.  Kudos to the fabulous TIP Staff (especially Dr. Nicki Charles) for simultaneously ensuring that Kate is being well taken care of while scrambling up a fabulously well-qualified pinch hitter to fill her large shoes.  We are very fortunate to be joined by TIP superstar Patricia Hege, who dropped everything to join our trip as group leader with less than 24 hours notice.  (note to self - always keep suitcase packed and passport current in case Nicki calls offering a free trip to Europe).  The kids are very excited.  We had another wonderful day today, capped off with an amazing talent show.  Photos to come. Stay tuned....
